APPLICATION FOR COLE SEAN DANNIALS
28 ¦ ER TRAUMA NURSE ¦ HUMAN ¦ BEN BARNES
PERSONALITY:
Working in nursing, being caring yet cynical is a given, never one to believe the front story from the word go and will always dig a little deeper, years through working in the ER has been valuable when learning this. That patient who comes in with two black eyes, a broken wrist and cuts all up and down his body never got that injury from falling over, and there was definitely going to be another patient on their way in. Becoming more cold and indifferent to the idea of death has also been something that has grown inside of this nurse, learning that death is inevitable, no matter how traumatic, nothing is going to stop death's mighty wrath when they have decided enough is enough, no matter how many times you shock that patient, crush their chest that little more and a few more times or push adrenaline through their worn out veins. That said, pride is one thing that he holds dear to his heart; he will always hold his head high and justify everything he has done, even if he doesn't feel he needs to, he can count on one hand how many times he hasn't been able to justify his actions in his life.
Being as cold as he is, he has got a name around the ER for it, people know not to get in his way when it comes to caring for his patients, but they also have learned that he's got excellent skills when it comes to starting IV's and taking blood samples, and will help anyone out with it. He's always been one of those people who voice their opinions no matter how many people may disagree with them, usually engaging mouth before brain. Of course, it has got him in a few situations, but it has also got him out of many situations, in and out of work.
Outside of work, believe it or not, he's quite a sociable person, once those blue scrubs come off and he's back in his usual casual clothing, there's nothing stopping him striking up conversation with a total stranger over a pint in the local bars. Coming from a background of elitism, he has had to learn the hard way that not everyone will be willing to accept that he is that way, and he had to make a lot of changes to his personal life style and how he treats others.
Anxiousness has been a huge part of his life ever since he has found out that his mother and sister might be expanding their business out and setting up office in Cloistere, mainly because he knows that other people will probably judge him for his lifestyle he used to live, not only that, he doesn't want to get dragged back into it. Reluctant to discuss his past with others has left him a bit of a shady name to him, no one truly knows where he came from, as far as they're all aware he moved from Southampton in England as soon as he graduated with his degree. Secretive? Maybe. Self-preserving? Definitely.
HISTORY:
Coming from a childhood of wealth and in general, being better off than most families in just about every aspect of life, he never went without both of his parents had well paid careers working in law, which they expected him to follow them into and then over-take the company. At the age of eight he began to heavily find himself becoming more interested in medical shows rather than tv series shows such as CSI, or Law & Order, marking the beginning of his journey into medicine. As a young child, he believed he was going to be a doctor, saving everyone who would end up in his care, but soon reality hit him when he lost his father. He began to spiral downwards, his schooling was put on the back burner as he was sent to therapy by his mother, who was also seeing a therapist for her onset of depression. His sister, Hannah, while she was obviously disturbed by the sudden onset of loss in the family, she decided to use studying as a coping mechanism, much more productive than Cole's method, of immersing himself in solitude and isolation.
At the age of twelve he was discharged from therapy, being told he would be always in the system should he ever need their services again, nothing terrified him more, being thrown back into a psychiatric system and being given advice from a total stranger, whom, in his opinion, was not worthy of time to talk to him. Growing up in such an elitist world, he knew nothing but socialising with the best of the best, and it showed with his friendships that he had forged during his time at school, always aiming to only talk to those from a 'good enough' background for him, or those who were achieving on par with his expectations of his friends. When he finally got himself back on track at school, he realised it was too late to start looking at being a doctor, he had blown that chance, something he began kicking himself for, but his back up plan was to go into nursing.
His mother, of course, wasn't entirely thrilled at the prospect of telling people her son was a nurse, while her daughter was off to law school, being a lady of social status, she feared people would look down on her, but Cole figured maybe it was time she was knocked down a peg or two, after all, he had been knocked down, as well. When it finally came around to selecting universities to go to, Cole had looked a bit further afield than staying in their home town of Kensington and studying at a university in London. He moved to Southampton, after having various heated debates with his mother for it, often threatening to cut him off financially, leaving him to survive on a student loan, which Cole couldn't be happier if she did, maybe then he'd get a 'normal' university experience. He had the being cut off discussion from her before when he came out of the closet as bisexual, anyway, it didn't bother him anymore.
With his sister graduating university before he even began attending, he knew exactly what to expect the stress, the tears and the long essays, but nothing could have prepared him for the 37.5 hour work weeks that was totally unpaid on the wards as well as everything else on top of university student struggles. They absolutely destroyed him, not only physically, but emotionally as well. It ended up with him being back on the anti-depressants, the constant sickness that surrounded him took it's toll on him and brought back memories of his father that he didn't expect to ever think about again. He began to question his decision in a health care field, but months of debating turned into years, and before he knew it he was graduating with a degree he wasn't even sure he wanted anymore. Of course, he couldn't tell anyone that, it was a secret he was going to have to carry to his own grave.
Feeling like he needed a fresh start, Cole moved away, far away. To the first hospital that would take him on in an area he wanted to work in, and it happens to be Cloistere. Having settled here for a few years, he has worked his way up from being the 'newly qualified kid' to working in the trauma and resuscitation room, and running it on weekends when he was working and there was not another nurse more senior than him there.
Of course, with annual visits from his family, he will never truly escape from their reality, with his doting mother consistently sending him care packages of funds through bank transfer, he has still not had to go without; he could happily live without working if he wanted to, just surviving on mummy's care funds, but he didn't want to do that. Instead, all of her money was stashed away for an emergency if there ever was one, or worst comes to worst, an emergency flight home and accommodation should the unlikely event ever rise. Now he was finally settled in, his world was about to turn upside down again when he received news from his sister; his mother wants her to expand the family law company, out to America, beginning in Louisiana, believing that Cloistere would be a good place to start, seeing as the family already had connections in this little town. Their plan? To dominate the law world in the USA.
